Natural Skincare After 40: How I Reclaimed Hydrated, Glowing Skin With Simple Rituals

Set in the fertile region of Bedugul, Bali, surrounded by volcanoes and lush landscapes, our farm is central to our mission to create natural skincare that cares for both your skin and the planet. This farm is not just where we grow the botanicals for our products; it’s where sustainable farming, innovation, and community partnerships come together to make a real impact.

Ever since I turned 40!

Ever since I turned 40, I began to notice subtle but lasting changes in my skin—it felt drier, tighter, and less radiant. While my skincare routine hadn’t changed, my skin clearly had. It wasn’t about adding more products; it was about deepening the way I cared for myself.

As someone already rooted in natural living, I knew that true beauty doesn’t come from quick fixes—it comes from rhythm, nourishment, and connection. That’s why I returned to what I know best: Ayurvedic rituals, whole-food nourishment, and simple, plant-based skincare.

This isn’t a before-and-after transformation. It’s a return to centre. A way of caring for my skin from the inside out.

And now, through Skyn.Rituel—coming soon—I’m sharing these time-honoured practices with others who want to glow, not in spite of age, but because of it.

Why Skin Gets Drier After 40—and What You Can Do About It

As we move into our 40s, hormonal shifts and increased vata dosha (in Ayurvedic terms) can lead to dryness, loss of elasticity, and greater sensitivity.

These changes aren’t flaws—they’re signals. Invitations to slow down, replenish, and honour your skin with deeper care.

What to Eat for Dry Skin and Glowing Energy After 40

What to Eat for Dry Skin and Glowing Energy After 40

Nourishing your skin through food is key. Here’s what I lean on every day:

Healthy Fats for Hydration

  • Avocados, flaxseed oil, tahini
  • Soaked almonds and walnuts
  • Ghee (Ayurveda’s golden nectar for skin and digestion)

Warm, Easy-to-Digest Meals

  • Stewed apples with cinnamon in the morning
  • Lentil or bone broth soups with turmeric and ginger
  • Cooked oats with dates, cardamom, and ghee

Herbal Hydration

  • Warm lemon water with a pinch of salt
  • CCF tea (cumin, coriander, fennel)
  • Rose, liquorice, or marshmallow root teas

Colourful Antioxidants

  • Pomegranate, berries, beets, and carrots
  • Fresh herbs like coriander and parsley
  • Lightly steamed dark greens

These aren’t fads—they’re daily practices that support not just your skin, but your mood, energy, and digestion too.

Nourishment from Within: My Go-To Bone Broth for Radiant Skin After 40

Over the years, I’ve learned that radiant skin doesn’t come from what you apply—it begins with how you nourish yourself.

As we move through our 40s and beyond, hydration, digestion, and internal nourishment become essential parts of any natural skincare ritual. One of the most supportive foods I’ve returned to again and again is bone broth—a slow, mineral-rich, collagen-supportive tonic that deeply replenishes the skin and gut from within.

This is not just comfort in a mug. It’s a ritual. One that supports the glow you feel and the glow you show.

Here’s my personal recipe—adapted with Ayurvedic spices and a probiotic finish to enhance both digestion and absorption.

Skin-Loving Bone Broth with Probiotic Twist

This broth is especially nourishing for women over 40. Rich in collagen, minerals, and amino acids, it supports skin elasticity, gut health, and overall energy. The addition of miso at the end brings in natural probiotics—supporting your microbiome, which is directly connected to skin health.

Ingredients

For the broth base:

  • 1 kg organic chicken or grass-fed beef bones (with joints or marrow if possible)

  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1 onion, halved

  • 2 garlic cloves, gently crushed

  • 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger

  • 1 carrot, chopped

  • 1 stalk of celery (optional)

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 1 tsp black peppercorns

  • 8–10 cups filtered water

Optional Ayurvedic additions:

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder or fresh turmeric root

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds

  • 1 small cinnamon stick

To finish (for gut support):

  • 1 tbsp unpasteurised miso paste (chickpea or white miso is gentle and skin-friendly)

  • Chopped coriander or parsley

  • Squeeze of lime or lemon

How to Make It

  1. Prep the bones (optional but flavourful): Roast bones at 200°C (400°F) for 25–30 minutes until golden.

  2. Simmer slowly: Add all ingredients to a large pot or slow cooker. Bring to a gentle boil, then immediately reduce to a low simmer.

  3. Cook for 12–24 hours, skimming any foam from the top in the first hour. Top up water as needed.

  4. Strain and cool: Once the broth is rich and golden, strain out the solids. Let it cool slightly.

  5. Stir in miso: Once the broth is warm (not hot), stir in miso to preserve its live probiotic benefits.

  6. Garnish and sip: Add herbs and citrus. Sip slowly and feel your body exhale.

Why This Ritual Supports Skin After 40

  • Collagen helps maintain elasticity and structure in aging skin

  • Gelatin and amino acids heal the gut lining, improving absorption of nutrients that support skin

  • Miso provides probiotics that balance your microbiome, often reflected directly in your complexion

  • Warming spices like ginger, turmeric, cumin, and fennel enhance digestion and circulation, improving nutrient delivery to the skin

You can sip this broth daily or use it as the base for grains, soups, or stews. I like to freeze portions so it’s always on hand when my skin—or energy—needs extra support.

This is the kind of ritual that nourishes beyond beauty. It’s not just about glow—it’s about how you feel in your body. And after 40, that kind of nourishment becomes everything.
